The DCU Institute of Education is the newest faculty at Dublin City University. It is based in a 70 million euro purpose-built facility on the DCU St Patrick’s Campus at Drumcondra in Dublin. Established in 2016 as Ireland’s first university education faculty, it has over 130 full-time academics and a student body of over 4,000 students.

The Institute brings together education students from all sectors, from early childhood, primary and post-primary education, to higher and higher education. In addition to offering a range of undergraduate programs in education, the Institute offers a rich menu of taught and research-based postgraduate programs at doctoral, masters, diploma and certificate levels.

The School of Inclusive and Special Education is one of six schools in the DCU Institute of Education. It is the first such school at an Irish university. It has a critical mass of expertise in the fields of inclusive education and special education and is dedicated to supporting the rights of all children and young people to appropriate education and learning for all. It has a strong research focus with full-time and part-time research staff and students, creating a vibrant research community.

The school offers a full range of continuing professional development programs for teachers working in inclusive and special education roles, including a postgraduate diploma in inclusive education, learning support and special education, master’s degree in Special Educational Needs, Masters in Specific Learning Disabilities (Dyslexia), Graduate Certificate and Masters of Education in Educating Students on the Autism Spectrum and an Online Certificate/Diploma in Inclusive and Special Education. He also contributes to the College’s initial teacher training programs and has taught the Ph.D.

Role Profile

The School of Inclusive and Special Education is looking to recruit two assistant professors to work in collaboration with members of the School and the Institute.

They will make a substantial contribution to the design, development and management of present and future initiatives addressing the needs of learners with additional/special educational needs. Continuing the School’s historic commitment to developing policy in Ireland in the area of ​​inclusive and special education, appointees will be expected to participate in research and policy networks and engage with key stakeholders of the system.

Duties and Responsibilities

Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Teach and learn

Successful applicants will be expected to contribute significantly to the development, teaching, assessment and administration of a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs at primary and post-primary levels.

Appointees will contribute, as appropriate, to the above programs and will be required to contribute to the teaching of other areas of education (at the request of the school principal) in addition to specialist areas, and contribute to the work widest of the DCU. Institute of Education.

They will participate in practice visits to schools and write evaluation reports to help teachers plan and practice.

Research and Fellowship

Successful applicants will engage in high-quality, impactful research and publication in the field of inclusive and special education on an individual and collaborative basis. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in school and university meetings, participate in program-related meetings, and represent the School in marketing and student recruitment. Qualifications and experience


  • Primary degree (NFQ level 8) in a relevant field and postgraduate degree in fields related to inclusive and special education, preferably at doctoral level;
  • Three years relevant experience.

The ideal successful person will have the following qualifications and experience

  • Graduate Diploma in Inclusive and Special Education;
  • Previous experience of in-career development work with teachers of students with special educational needs would be an advantage;
  • Experience working with learners with additional/special educational needs;
