Education has broadly been defined as the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially in a school or university. Simply, it is the process of transmitting all forms of knowledge, formal, non-formal and others. That is why governments around the world are striving to adequately fund education at all levels. As is often said, education is the best legacy to bequeathed to the young people who are the future leaders of nations, including Nigeria and Sokoto State. To do otherwise would be catastrophic for society. It is therefore not surprising that the three levels of government have done what is necessary by financing education: basic, secondary and higher.
The happy story is no different in Sokoto State, especially from 2015 to date under the administration of Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. Although education is on the competing list of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the administration in place has defied all prognoses and given it priority at all levels. Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic Sokoto is one of the higher education institutions receiving adequate funding from the current administration. The Polytechnic School was established by the Sokoto State Government under Law No. 2 of 2002. It should be recalled that the former Sokoto State established a Polytechnic School in Birnin-Kebbi and Talata Mafara , which were lost to the current states of Kebbi and Zamfara in 1991 and 1996, respectively.
Therefore, the government, in its determination to raise the level of education in the state, merged the former Haliru Binji College of Arts and Sciences and Sani Abacha Administration College and promoted them to the status of polytechnic school with Dr Abubakar Umar Dikko as pioneer rector. and the late Alh Abubakar Zaki Tambuwal as the institution’s first chairman of the board. The polytechnic took off in July 2001 with five colleges and then expanded into seven.
It was therefore renamed Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto in 2016. These colleges are: College of Science and Technology (CST), College of Engineering (COE), College of Administrative and Business Studies (CABS), College of Arts and Humanities ( CAH)), College of General Studies (CGS), College of Environmental Studies (CES) and College of Agriculture (COA) studies with the aim of technological and economic advancement of the state, as well as providing entry requirements to university and other higher education institutions. Others are to offer courses of study at certificates, national and higher diploma, polytechnic diploma and other Arts, language, science, technology and other branches of learning with the ultimate goal of serving society and beyond. It is also to ensure, through teaching, research and other means, the advancement of knowledge and its practical application to the needs of society and beyond, among others. So the story was recorded on Saturday September 25, 2021 at the Polytechnic when she successfully led the 2nd graduation ceremony following the first held in 2014.
