New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Liz Truss on being chosen to be the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and expressed confidence that under her leadership, the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the United Kingdom will be further strengthened.

Britain’s Foreign Secretary Truss beat Indian-born former Chancellor Rishi Sunak to be named the winner of the Conservative Party leadership race on Monday and will now formally take over as Britain’s prime minister as as Boris Johnson’s successor.

“Congratulations @trussliz on being chosen to be the next UK PM. Confident that under your leadership, the India-UK comprehensive strategic partnership will be further strengthened,” Modi said in a tweet.

“I wish you the best in your new role and your new responsibilities,” he said.

The 47-year-old British minister was expected to become Britain’s third female prime minister after 170,000 online and postal votes cast by Tory members, ending Sunak’s historic run as the first member of the Parliament of Indian descent to compete for the summit. work at 10 Downing Street.
