Musicians in Action, Inc. (MIA) and Guitar Center Music Foundation have come together to help TJ Fisher present alternative careers to urban youth.

Gerald and Jacquelyn Malone, President and CEO of MIA, have respectfully dedicated years exposing young people of all genders and ages to the joys of gospel music and the opportunities to grow as a professional. In addition to presenting music workshops and training sessions, they mentor underprivileged children and adolescents in the community.

“One of our popular workshops is our annual Drum Clinic, which typically features famous musicians such as Sheila E. Additionally, TJ Fisher is one of the Drum Clinic coordinators,” Jacquelyn said.

“Through his foundation, Drums For Success, he wants to make a difference through music education with mentorship and by creating programs to help future generations.”

Considering MIA’s influential reputation in the industry, it’s no surprise that Myka Miller, executive director of the Guitar Center Music Foundation, turned to the Malones for help. The Miller Foundation has access to new and lightly used musical instruments, which are donated to school music classes, after-school programs, and music therapy programs.

“Myka is not only behind the smooth running of the foundation, but she is also responsible for putting musical instruments in the hands of thousands of children across the country,” said Jacquelyn. “So when she asked for suggestions of groups to donate instruments to, I recommended organizing TJ. “

After meeting Miller, Fisher mentioned that the Frederick KC Price School, where he works, was also sorely lacking in the music arena. As a result, Miller and the Guitar Center Music Foundation have provided musical instruments to the school and to Drums For Success. Additionally, USC Thornton School of Music Professor Jae Deal helped ensure the gift was solidified.

Thrilled with the result, Fisher said, “I have been a music teacher for over 20 years, working with schools, nonprofits and organizations to help downtown youth. [along with] a career as a professional musician.

“My current objective is to build a leisure center / a music school to supervise young people and keep them away from the streets and train the future leaders of tomorrow. “

Jacquelyn added, “Thanks to the generosity of Myka Miller and the Guitar Center Music Foundation, TJ has helped her reach further!”
