Aiming to focus on emerging knowledge areas, the National Institute for Technical Teacher Training and Research (NITTTR) of Sector 26, Chandigarh, is considering achieving university status in the âde novoâ category.
The institution has already submitted its detailed project report to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and also requested a certificate of no objection from the University of Punjab (PU). The school will obtain the status if it obtains the approval of the Union Ministry of Education.
The status considered as academic in the âde novoâ category is granted to institutes devoted to unique and emerging areas of knowledge, not pursued by conventional or existing areas, in particular in specific areas of study and research.
Promotes the development of polytechnic education in the north
The NITTTR Chandigarh was established in 1967 by the Indian government, along with three other similar institutions in Bhopal, Chennai and Kolkata. It was designed to meet the requirements of the development of polytechnic education in the northern region covering Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand , Delhi and Chandigarh.
Since 1983, the institution has guided and assisted these States in the fields of educational planning and management. In 1992, NITTTR Chandigarh started offering regular Master of Engineering programs and from 2005 modular Master of Engineering programs were launched.
All programs are offered to teachers of technical institutions and their administrators, to industry professionals and to applicants in general. These programs are affiliated with PU. The institution was also recognized as a research center by the PU in 2006 and the Technical University of Punjab (PTU) in 2005 for the pursuit of a doctorate.
15-year strategic plan of the Institute
The 15-year strategic plan of NITTTR envisions the development of the institute considered as academic, to meet the needs of the technical education system in view of the changing scenario, with more emphasis on the use of ICT in the teaching-learning process. . Its objectives are: to become a privileged university offering multidisciplinary teacher-oriented programs; establish centers of excellence in selected areas of engineering and technology with the collaboration of industry; to provide programs with a multi-point input and output option, among other things.
Unique programs offered
NITTTR Chandigarh Director Shyam Sundar Pattnaik said, âThe country needs certain areas that are strategic in nature and meet demand-driven societal demands. Conventional institutions are structured for a particular requirement and they cannot change very quickly, but an institute like NITTTR can. This is the reason why we applied for university status in the de novo category.
âIf we get the status, we would like to launch these strategic programs which cannot be managed by conventional institutions,â he added.
The unique postgraduate programs offered by the institute include digital kinematics for organizational resilience, 3D / 4D printing, innovative design and production, management of sensors, data and IoT systems, drone technology and unmanned airborne systems, nanophotonics and others.
