Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said Nigeria needs to invent and produce cutting edge artificial intelligence (AI) applications for education, business, medicine and security.

He said that effective collaboration between the public and private sectors to create world-class institutions focused on innovation in science, technology and management science would help provide solutions to the country’s challenges.

Osinbajo addressed the founding class (2021) of the Nigerian University of Technology and Management (NUTM), Lagos on Saturday.

The event was the institution’s first graduation ceremony to its flagship scholarship program.

NUTM is a leading innovation and technology school focused on leadership training in Nigeria and Africa, promoted by Dr Okey Enelamah, former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment.

“The most important problems of this generation, especially in Africa, will require innovation in science, technology and management science, especially entrepreneurship and innovative leadership if we are to have a chance to solve them. “

The Vice President said that the graduates of the NUTM program have what it takes to be among those who in the future will provide solutions to national and global challenges in different sectors.

“I think that sitting in front of us today, the graduates of the NUTM Fellowship program, we could just see the men and women with the answers to some of the world’s most important challenges.

“And there are indeed many challenges. We need to invent and produce cutting-edge AI applications for education, business, medicine, and security.

“We must design the educational innovation needed to train millions of children in or out of classrooms across the country and on our continent, and provide the techniques to create large-scale technological opportunities,” he said. -he declares.

Osinbajo said that in agriculture Nigeria needs to invent advanced devices, precision farming methodologies and robotic systems.

He said such inventions would ensure huge yields per hectare or per volume of dairy and livestock products to meet the food security needs of a country that will move to the third position in the size of the world’s population in a few years.

“And we are waiting for the breakthrough in the treatment of particular African health problems such as sickle cell anemia, fibroids and cancers.

“There is so much to do. But we know that revolutionary innovation in technology or commerce will always be the product of the work of well-trained people.

“This is why the NUTM scholarship program was designed to offer cutting-edge knowledge in technology, entrepreneurship and design; Management; Perspectives in Revolutionary Leadership Ideas, Critical Thinking, and Writing.

According to him, the university’s goal is to train and equip highly sophisticated experts in crack technology, innovation and management.

“The students are the first members of this dream team. And we hold our breath as we wait for you to play the roles that are meant for you.

“First and foremost, every major innovative breakthrough in science, technology or social science was the product of patient, collaborative work, sometimes across nations.

“There is no innovation yet around the difficult and sometimes time-consuming task of creating scarce value,” he said.

According to him, the second reason why most people will never reach significance is that they are only interested in themselves and their personal successes.

“But to gain prominence you have to do something much bigger than yourself, a big idea, a huge game changer should always be your target.

“Third, develop a mindset that you’re as good as anyone who has ever developed a game-changing idea.

“The innovators who solve the problems are, after all, men and women, not spirits. And that’s important because the way not to do that is to have a mind unable to see huge things, ”he said.

While commending the founders, management and academics of NUTM for a great job, Osinbajo told graduates that those who built Dubai were men and women, not spirits.

In his welcoming remarks, Enelamah, who is also the Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, thanked the Vice President for attending the event.

He added that NUTM was a pioneering higher education institution that was established to train leaders and innovators to create impact in Africa and other parts of the world.
