Department overview

The growing Department of Translation and Interpretation is an integral part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Dynamic and dynamic, the Department has a Bachelor’s program in Translation and Interpretation, which offers a rich selection of theoretical and practical modules, including theories of translation and interpretation, practical translation, specialized translation (journalistic, commercial, legal, audiovisual, etc.), translation technology and localization, and all levels of interpretation. The department also contributes to a translation and interpreting pathway for UG’s four popular English programs. In addition, the staff recruits and supervises doctoral projects on topics related to their research areas.

The Department operates two laboratories with the most advanced equipment and facilities designed for professional training in translation, consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting.

responsibilities and duties

We are looking for candidates with excellent research, teaching and supervisory qualifications who will contribute to the research and teaching profiles of the Department.

The agent of the Teaching & Research is supposed to perform the following functions:

  • Contribute extensively to undergraduate teaching programs: BA Translation and Interpretation and the translation pathway of the four English programs.
  • Contribute to the design, development, planning and implementation of high quality curriculum and assessment activities.
  • Supervise or assist in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate research (PhD) students.
  • Produce research and publications of international excellence.
  • Obtain internal and external financial support for research.
  • Engage with broader scholarly communities.
  • Assume administrative responsibilities required by the department, school and university.
  • To maintain its own continuous professional development.

The agent of the teaching practice Track is supposed to perform the following functions:

  • Contribute extensively to undergraduate teaching programs: BA Translation and Interpretation and the translation pathway of the four English programs. Ideally, the successful candidate should be able to prepare, present and correct interpretation modules.
  • Contribute to the design, development, planning and implementation of high quality curriculum and assessment activities.
  • Supervise practice-based final year projects for undergraduate students.
  • Publish good quality practice-based research.
  • Linking professional knowledge of translation and interpreting with teaching and research.
  • Engage with broader professional communities.
  • Assume administrative responsibilities required by the department, school and university.
  • To maintain its own continuous professional development.

Personal qualities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of ministerial citizenship and teamwork.
  • The ability to adapt to institutional changes, identify desired results and achieve objectives within a specified time frame.

Essential qualifications/experience

Teaching and research track

  • PhD in translation and interpretation, or a relevant related discipline.
  • Strong subject matter knowledge combined with extensive subject matter experience allowing for contributions to teaching programs.
  • Evidence of ability to design and teach research-oriented modules in the areas offered by the department.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct good quality research in translation and interpreting studies or in interdisciplinary fields.
  • Evidence of a clear research, funding and publication strategy.

Teaching and practice track

  • Master’s degree or above in translation and interpreting, translation studies, interpreting, conference interpreting or in a relevant field.
  • Substantial professional experience in translation and interpreting.
  • Teaching and assessment experience in a higher education setting.
  • Evidence of ability to design and teach practical and professionally relevant modules in the areas offered by the department.
  • Evidence of ability to conduct practice-based research in translation and interpreting, or in interdisciplinary fields.
  • Evidence of ability to establish and maintain effective networking with wider professional communities.

Desirable qualifications

  • Higher education diploma, HEA scholarship status or related education diploma.
  • Experience in university program management and curriculum design.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Knowledge of China and Chinese higher education.
  • Familiarity with the UK higher education system.

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese labor laws and must comply with provincial government regulations. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with respect to obtaining work permits and visas.
