YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Dana Ensemble of Youngstown State University will perform a free concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 4 at the Butler Institute of American Art North Annex.

The program will feature Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in G major, conducted by Michael Butler and featuring vocalist Misook Yun.

Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 creates musical images illustrating childhood.

The author will talk about the history of Boardman

BOARDMAN TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Local author Dick Lalumia, who co-wrote “That’s the Way It Was – Historical Highlights of Boardman Township” with John Moore (1976), will speak Saturday, September 10 at 9 a.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Hall Center Stambaugh.

The event is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society.

Lalumia’s book is a history of the township, from the 1870s to the 1970s and includes historical photographs of people, places and buildings.

LaLumia graduated in 1957 from Boardman High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. He became a teacher at Boardman Middle School.

His lecture inaugurates the society’s annual membership campaign and is free to the public.

Square Dancing Club to celebrate

NILES, Ohio — The Niles Friendly Squares will celebrate their 12th anniversary with a square dance on Saturday, September 10 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St. Dress is casual. Admission is $6. Gene Hammond and Neil Harner will be the callers.

A new session of weekly square dancing lessons will begin on September 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. Each lesson builds on the previous session and will include learning new steps as well as review and practice. Tuesday evening sessions will run for 12 weeks at the Niles SCOPE Center. There is a $6 fee per person per class.

Course “The basics of theater” at the JCC

YOUNGSTOWN — The Jewish Community Center School of Theater will be offering a “Basics of Theater” workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from September 14 to October 26 at the JCC, 505 Gypsy Lane.
This introductory course for ages 10-17 will cover everything you need to get involved in theatre. Participants will practice important skills such as building stage presence, researching and performing monologues, and preparing for auditions.

Registration is mandatory before September 9th. The cost is $75 for JCC members and $100 for non-members. Visit jccyoungstown.org to register. There will be no classes on October 5.
