UGC warns students against admission to distance learning courses at Annamalai University

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has warned students against admission to any program offered by Annamalai University of Tamil Nadu via distance learning mode, saying the university has no required approvals from the higher education regulator.

“UGC has learned that Annamalai University is running distance learning programs and is admitting students into Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programs without UGC approval in clear violation of all the terms set out in the UGC (Open and Distance Learning) Regulations, 2017 as amended from time to time and UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programs and Online Programs) Regulations, 2020,” said the Secretary UGC Rajnish Jain.

According to the standards, no higher education institution can offer open and distance learning programs and admit learners unless they are recognized by the Commission.

“Annamalai University has only been recognized to offer a program in ODL mode until the 2014-15 academic session and no further recognition has been given to it to offer a program in ODL mode. Accordingly, all programs ODLs proposed by the university are now invalid and the university is solely responsible for the consequences on the careers of the students, if any, resulting therefrom.

“The general public, students and other stakeholders are warned by this public notice not to be admitted into any program offered by Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu through the ODL mode. Admission into such programs may jeopardize students’ careers, in the absence of the required recognition,” says Jain.

There was no reaction available from Annamalai University on the matter.
