What happened to the casting of Sharkboy and Lavagirl?

Rocket, Racer and Rebel Rodriguez are all sons of director Robert Rodriguez. Rebel played Sharkboy at 5, Racer played Sharkboy at 7, and Rocket played Lug, one of Max’s class. Along with Robert Rodriguez, Racer co-wrote “Red 11” and the VR short “The Limit”. Over the past couple of years, Racer has even tried his hand at production.
